Look, Ma! I Can Read!

Every summer (literally, every single summer), I make this solemn vow to myself that I am going to become this intelligent reader and read like a book a week. Well. That doesn't happen. It never has. I promise that I have the very best of intentions, but just the idea of "curling up with a good book" just doesn't sound very appealing! Every vacation, I've brought a book or two on the plane, and I always end up buying a trashy celeb magazine instead. I've tried to read outside, on a pretty day, but I end up falling asleep. I read in the bathtub, and then I get sweaty and have to finish my bath. I'll curl up on the couch with a blanket and my puppy and a book, and...I get bored. Get this. This year, I even told Jamie that I was gonna get a membership to our local library! Oh my goodness! Who am I?! Well, I am a future reader, ladies and gentlemen. And now I've got it in writing (well, in typing), so you all are kind of keeping me accountable! I've decided that since God has given me the ability to read, then I need to do it. I have eyes. I know how to read. I own good books. So. I should read more. Here is the lineup of books that I am bound and determined to read before 2010 is over. (No laughing. I'm that much of a non-reader, so I'm gonna needs plenty of time. Don't judge.)
#1: Unshaken by Francine Rivers...I've read several of her books and actually love her writing! Get this, I am already on page 127 and there are 144 pages in the whole book! Woo Hoo! I'll probably finish this puppy tomorrow! A full update once I'm finished :) Read about this book here.

#2: A Thousand Tomorrows by Karen Kingsbury. My friend, Emily, let me borrow this book. She claims to be a non-reader too, and she loved this book! So that gives me a bit of hope that I'll be able to finish it! 235 pages. I can do it. Read about this book here.

#3 This Side of Heaven by Karen Kingsbury as well. Emily also gave me this one to read. So we'll see how this goes. 307 pages. All right. We've gone from 100 something pages to 200 something pages. Now we're in the 300s. Whoa nelly. Read about this book here.

#4 The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I know all/most of you have either heard of this one and even read it. I've only heard phenomenal things about this book, so I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and read it too. Even though there are 444 pages!!!!....supposedly I won't be able to put it down once I've started. We'll see. Read about this book here.
I'll keep you updated on my reading journey. We'll see how it goes. Maybe I'll be smarter? Maybe I'll actually enjoy this whole reading thing? Maybe I'll write a book all on my own!!!!??? Okay. I've gone too far. That probably won't happen. But I really am excited to read these books. I'm almost finished with the first one :) That's a good start!

This is a picture of the coffee cake that I made yesterday. Emily, Jenny, Jamie and I already took some big chunks out of it before I took this awful picture with my phone. Oooo baby! This is good stuff! Take it to your next brunch or Sunday School this weekend, and you will be very popular :) Here is the recipe: TheBestCoffeeCakeEver

Today, I am going to Bellevue to help out Jenny with some organization tubs in the office. No idea what I'll be doing, but I really like Jenny and want to help her out. Plus, I'm getting Lenny's for lunch! Helloooo!? Yummo!

I hope you all have an INCREDIBLE day and remember to talk to Jesus sometime today! Smile often! Be nice to those around you! Give everyone you're with a big hug! Tell your loved ones that you love them! All that to say, picture me with a big smile on my face and pretend I'm hugging you and I'm telling you now, I love you tons!! God bless, y'all!

  1. Abby, I'm not a reader either, but like to sometimes pretend that I am. I'm on a reading low right now...but maybe I'll pick it back up. When I was a little more into reading, a friend recommended Lori Wick. She has some great easy reading books. A lot of them are based in the 1800's with some good Godly love stories. There isn't a book of her's that I haven't enjoyed. Good luck!

  2. So funny, I'm trying to do the same thing! I bought "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan. It's an excellent read so far, I highly recommend it! I'm going to check out "The Help" after I finish up with this! :)
