What's sad is that up until about noon-ish yesterday, I thought it was Friday. And I even woke up this morning thinking it was Saturday. What is wrong with me?! I guess I'm kind of glad it wasn't Saturday today, because I work from 10:00 to 6:00 tomorrow at the store. It's super fun though, and I've really enjoyed it! I've been told several times that I'm a good saleswoman and that I am a natural. That makes me feel really good considering I was never even good at fundraising for pom or choir in high school. I love my job!
What's really interesting about working retail is that you can TOTALLY tell what kind of customer is walking in the door. I personally love to be greeted when I walk in any store but not bombarded. If the sales person talks to me too much, then I'm outa there, so I've always tried to be mindful of that.
Here are the types of people that come into the store:
- Strictly browsing: People who are bored, just got done with their lunch date, on a walk in the area, nothing in mind, do not want to be bothered. I usually greet these people, keep my eye on them and leave them be. They are probably not going to buy anything.
- On a mission: These folks know what they want. If we don't have it, they're gone. I always try to help them find what they want ASAP because I know that their attention span is short and fixated on a certain item. I kind of like these people because I can point them in specific directions or attempt to change their mind.
- Money ain't a thang: These people are my FAVORITE!! These are the types of people who come in just to shop. Plain and simple. We had a gal come in the other day and drop almost $700 on customized jewelry for her DOGS!!! Yes her DOGS!! I love people like her! These people find joy in shopping. They love to shop and buy for themselves and others. Love. These. Customers.
- Snooty: These creeps are the worst. They're the ones who treat you like you're the help. They come in and don't say hi when you greet them. No eye contact. Cold. Distant. Rude. Rarely buys anything and when they do, no chit chat. No smiles. All business. I'm not a fan of these shoppers. (They're often women wearing tennis outfits and designer jewelry and handbags...odd, I know) Lighten up!
- Wild Card: There are those people who just absolutely SHOCK you! My favorite customers all week was this cute elderly couple who looked like they just stepped off the farm. The store I work in is a little ritzy, and judging a book by its cover, I wouldn't have placed this couple in my store. They ended up buying a TON! She even looked at this really sassy purse worth $500 and bought a bunch of really sexy jewelry. I loved it. These people are wild cards. They just surprise you and you never know what you're gonna get. I like them a lot.
- The Indecisive: This is an annoying customer to me. They come in knowing what they want. But not really. But kind of. But just a little bit. But they don't know what they want completely. But they think this'll work. But then it doesn't. But then they don't even know how much to spend. But then they need to look around. But then they need help. Make up yo' dang mind!
- The Talkers: I've had some of the best conversations with people who just want to talk. You'd be amazed at how open people are while shopping. Some people have stayed over an hour and we've just chit-chatted. Even if they don't buy anything, I love these people. They make my day happy :)
So far, that is what I've learned about my customers. Regardless, I want everyone who leaves that store to know that I acknowledged them and made them feel important. Whether they bought anything or not. All in all, I love my job and am super happy with my decision on what I'm doing while we're here in Lafayette. Will I teach again? Probably. Will I get certified in personal training? Maybe. I'm almost 25 years old and have plenty of time to decide what I want to do with my life. But for now, I'm satisfied and joyful :) Amen.
