See Ya, Trashy Music!

An oldie, but a goodie! Kirk Franklin: The Nu Nation Project
My new J'SON CD: life on life

My new Lecrae CD: rebel

The other day, I was only my daily walk/run and the song opened up with "Get off yo f*ckin' *ss!" And then it continued with other expletives throughout the whole song. I felt gross. I felt degraded. I felt empty. I felt dirty. I felt hypocritical. And the bad thing is that I kept changing the song, and they were all trashy and filled with filthy language! It took me like 10 song changes til I got to a song with no bad words and didn't talk about women's body parts in a dirty way. In my mind, I was thinking, "Wow, Abby...you've really become this deaf to this kind of music?" After that work out, I went home and deleted the obscene music on my playlist.
Here are my thoughts:
1. Why in the world would I listen to a song that calls women, b*tches and wh*res? I'm not the kind of girl, so why would I support an artist who talks about me that way?
2. Most, if not all of these songs talk about heavy promiscuity, which I don't promote. I don't look down on or judge it, because we all have our struggles, but if I don't support it, why would I sing about it?
3. I have found myself singing along to these songs in my head!! Colossians 2:8 says, "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ." Basically, these songs have been taking me captive, because I've listened to them during every work out, each day, memorizing the songs, soaking them in, repeating them while they play. Why waste such good brain space on icky music?
4. Lastly, I get distracted by the bad songs with a good beat. Hellooo? There are soooo many good songs out there that sing about different things, like Jesus and other walks of life, and that don't say ugly words and call me bad names indirectly and turn sex and drugs and alcohol into light topics. Some of my favorite rap artists are Lecrae, 116Clique, KirkFranklin, Tedashii, and several more. Check these guys out! They are talented! Sure, some Christian music is cheesy and corny and I get that!!! But honestly, these guys are really awesome! I love to memorize their lyrics, because a lot of it is scripture-based, so you're listening to a great song and memorizing scripture at the same time! How great!
I promise I'm not trying to sound legalistic or like a holy roller, because I'm totally not! But, there is such a great alternative with music these days. Christian rap artists are getting much better at producing really good music that sounds mainstream. Check it out.
Here are a few songs that I really like, and I think you will to. In no specific order:
1. Souled Out--Lecrae
2. We Don't--Lecrae
3. Crossover--Lecrae
4. Breathe In Breathe Out--116 Clique
5. The Click--116 Clique
6. Unashamed--Lecrae and Tedashii
7. Looking for You--Kirk Franklin
8. Revolution--Kirk Franklin
9. Stomp--Kirk Franklin and the Nu Nation
10. Off Da Hook--Tedashii
11. Ooh Aah--Grits
12. Let the Praise Begin--Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ
Those are just a few of my top favorites! Check them out and you won't regret it! I promise!
God bless, you guys and have an awesome Wednesday!!!

  1. Abby,

I would completely agree! Christian rap artists are improving so much these days. Another good artist is Mary Mary. Thanks for the list of artist you enjoy! I love your blog! Keep it up!
